Holiday Hunger Help!

3rd August 2018

We need your support more than ever over the Summer!

We were delighted to receive a cheque for £1,600 from Radio Clyde’s Cash for Kids to help us with our very busy Summer period.

Now that the Summer holidays are in full flow, we are seeing the impact with a significantly increased need for our service from parents with children off school. 30% of our 3-day emergency food packages go to kids in the local area, with the school Summer holidays becoming a very busy time for us. Unfortunately, it’s also the time of year that we tend to struggle most with donations of food and funds.

Families who rely on free school meals at primary school during term time can find themselves facing hunger in the school holidays, when there is extra financial pressure to provide main meals. A report from the App Party Parliamentary Group on Hunger estimated the loss of free school meals during the holidays adds £30 & £40 a week to parents’ outgoings for one child.

Lots of people are just getting by day-to-day but find their income simply won’t stretch to meet the extra pressure of missing free school meals or paying for extra childcare during the holidays. Help is here for you in Airdrie should you need it. Everyone who comes to the foodbank is referred by a local agency who holds our vouchers so we’d encourage anyone worried they won’t be able to afford food this summer to get in touch.

With the very generous donation from Clyde’s Cash for Kids, we’ve been able to make up kids lunch packs with a range of healthy snacks which we’ll provide to families in need throughout the coming weeks.
